A young man whose ute was hit by a train was found unconscious, 10 metres away from the train tracks by emergency services.
Police were called to the crash near Taumarunui, on Whakapapa Rd, at 3.40pm on Tuesday.
He had lost consciousness and may have freed himself from the ute, according to the Auckland Rescue Helicopter Trust.
But he can't remember doing so.
The collision happened at a small farm crossing, south of Stone Jug Rd, a police spokeswoman said at the time.
The man, in his 20s, was flown by the Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter to Waikato Hospital with multiple injuries.
