The Auckland Westpac Rescue Helicopter was called to the scene at about 1pm to attend to the man in his 20's whose truck had fallen about 10m onto a riverbank below the Mangemangeroa Gorge Bridge.
He was the sole occupant and suffered multiple injuries.
Emergency services were also called and used ropes to bring the patient up to the road.
Emergency crews described the man as being "very lucky"given the height of the fall.
Part of Whitford Road is closed and diversions are in place near Point View Drive and Whitford Village.
Motorists are being asked to avoid the area.
The Serious Crash Unit is in attendance.
