Whakaari/White Island: Doctor on what he found - RNZ

One of the doctors who landed on Whakaari/White Island in the aftermath of Monday's eruption says there was a strong smell of sulphur in the air that left his eyes and throat stinging.

St John medical director Tony Smith was one of the doctors onboard an Auckland-based Westpac rescue helicopter, when they were dispatched to Whakatane.

He told RNZ reporter Sarah Robson what happened.
